DataRoad - IT Services and Consulting designed, installed and manages the network infrastructure of six hotels located between Praça dos Restauradores and Rossio, in Lisbon. Each property has a structured network, isolated guest Wi-Fi, a segmented firewall, video surveillance, PMS and Microsoft 365, all under alert-based monitoring and support under an IT Unlimited contract. The result: a hotel estate with a single technical standard and a single accountable team.
This article describes a real case. If you are looking for the service itself, the right page is managed IT for hotels: network, Wi-Fi, CCTV and PMS.
The project in figures and facts
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Clients | Six hotels in the Restauradores and Rossio area, Lisbon |
| Sector | Hospitality with international guests all year round |
| Scope | Cabling and network infrastructure, guest Wi-Fi, firewall, CCTV, connectivity, PMS, Microsoft 365, alert-based monitoring, IT Unlimited support |
| Model | Turnkey installation followed by an ongoing support contract |
The properties are BePoet Hotel, BeHotel, Rossio Plaza Hotel, Nicola Rossio Hotel, LX Arch Rossio Hotel and Ouro Rossio Hotel. They are all a few minutes’ walk from one another.
From separate networks to a managed estate
The hotels did not arrive at the same time. Each came with its own works, its own schedule and its own project. The change came from the second one onwards: DataRoad stopped doing isolated installations and began managing an estate of business networks with common rules.
Today the six properties share the same network architecture, the same security criteria, the same monitoring console and the same support team. For each hotel’s management, this means predictability: what works in one works in all.
Why a hotel network needs a different design
In an office, every user and every device is known. In a hotel, users change every day, bring their own devices and connect without help. If the Wi-Fi fails, the guest writes about it in a public review. Around Rossio there is an extra factor: old buildings, some of them listed, with half-metre-thick walls.
- Size for density A full floor may have three to four devices connected per room at the same time. The criterion is capacity, not square metres: streaming in one room must not degrade the video call in the room next door.
- Isolate guests from each other No guest should see another guest’s device on the same network. It is one of the most frequent failures in hotels whose network was designed like that of a large office.
- Work with the building as it is There are restrictions on works and little space to run cable or expose equipment. Coverage is solved with an on-site survey, not on a floor plan.
The infrastructure layers in each property
The scope is the same in all six hotels and is adjusted to the layout and number of rooms in each.
Structured cabling and switching
Rack, fibre between floors, switches and network points to the rooms. It is the foundation that determines everything else: a badly cabled network cannot be saved with more expensive equipment. More detail in structured cabling and network infrastructure.
Guest Wi-Fi
Coverage in rooms, corridors, reception, restaurant, terraces and service areas. The guest network is completely separate from the operations network: a guest’s laptop cannot reach the PMS, the POS terminals, the cameras or the management workstations. See business Wi-Fi for hotels and short-term rentals.
Firewall and segmentation
Firewall with a VLAN per function, per-network policies, filtering and logging. This layer is what allows guests, staff, PMS, video surveillance and building automation to coexist in the same building without crossover. See managed firewalls and cybersecurity.
Connectivity
Internet circuits sized to actual occupancy and routing designed so that the failure of one line does not leave reception unable to check guests in.
Cameras on the same infrastructure, but out of reach
Video surveillance uses the same physical cabling as the network, but lives on its own logical network. A parallel installation is avoided and, above all, the cameras are inaccessible to anyone connected to the guest Wi-Fi.
- IP cameras At entrances, reception, access points, technical areas and common areas, on a dedicated network.
- Local recording A recorder with capacity calculated for the agreed retention period.
- Controlled access Per user, with a log of who viewed what.
- GDPR Signage and image-processing policy aligned with the law.
Poorly segmented CCTV is both a security risk and a regulatory risk. Discover our business video surveillance on a dedicated network service.
PMS and Microsoft 365: where operations happen
Without the PMS there is no check-in, no invoicing and no room allocation. That is why the property management system has its own network and traffic priority, and is among the first things checked in any intervention. DataRoad installs, connects and maintains the PMS, the reception workstations, the back office and the integrations.
Microsoft 365 handles reservations and management email, files shared between shifts and the account lifecycle of a team with high turnover. A former employee’s account forgotten and left open is worth more to an attacker than a misconfigured firewall. See Microsoft 365 management.

NOC and monitoring: the alert arrives before reception notices
All six hotels are on IT Unlimited, DataRoad’s managed IT services model: support with no hours counted, response times written into the contract and continuous monitoring of the infrastructure.
Switches, firewalls, access points, recorders and circuits are under constant monitoring. When something deviates from normal, the alert reaches the engineering team immediately, and many issues are resolved before reception notices them. In an incident at three in the morning, with reception staffed by one person, this is what separates an internal log entry from a public complaint.
The advantage of six hotels on the same block
- An engineer at the door When an on-site visit is needed, travel is no longer what determines the resolution time.
- A single standard Equipment from the same family, configurations following the same logic and uniform documentation; any engineer on the team knows where everything is.
- Replacement without waiting A faulty switch or access point is swapped for equivalent equipment that is already known and tested.
- Accumulated knowledge What was solved in one old Rossio building applies to the next; each project starts out better than the last.
DataRoad’s proposition for hospitality is to take on the entire infrastructure: design it, install it, watch over it and answer for it, so that management can focus on guests rather than cables.
Each hotel, its own documented case

- BePoet Hotel The entire IT area, from cabling to support.
- BeHotel Same scope of network, guest Wi-Fi, security, CCTV and support.
