In 2026, the Serviços Sociais da Administração Pública (SSAP), the Portuguese public administration's social services body, awarded DataRoad a public tender for a business wireless network with 14 access points in one of its buildings in Lisbon. The project includes a rack, an enterprise firewall and the ongoing management and maintenance of the network, with alerting. It is DataRoad's sixth project for this organisation.

Why a public body returns to the same partner

An organisation bound by public procurement rules does not choose out of goodwill: every award is scrutinised. When SSAP comes back to DataRoad for the sixth time, the signal is objective. The networks delivered in previous years are still working exactly as designed.

This trust, built project by project, underpins DataRoad's position as a premium network management company and one of Portugal's benchmarks in enterprise networks and business wireless networks.

How the network was designed

A business wireless network starts at the rack and ends at the user's device. Hanging access points from the ceiling is not enough. For this building, DataRoad defined five layers:

  1. Coverage — 14 enterprise-grade access points, positioned to give uniform signal across the whole building and serve many users at once, without drop-outs or dead zones.
  2. Rack — installed and organised, with labelled, tidy and documented cabling, ready to grow without building works.
  3. Enterprise firewall — protects the entire network, controls internet access and separates traffic for services, staff and visitors.
  4. Configuration — wireless and wired networks configured by DataRoad, segmented and with security policies.
  5. Operation — after handover, the network moves into the day-to-day management of the DataRoad team.

After installation: managed network and alerting

The installation is what you see. What sets a managed network apart is what happens every day afterwards. The SSAP network is under continuous monitoring by DataRoad:

  • Alerting If an access point, the firewall or the internet connection fails, the alert reaches our team, often before any user notices.
  • Preventive maintenance Firmware and security updates kept current, configuration reviews and coverage adjustments.
  • Centralised management New networks, changes and requests handled remotely, without waiting for a site visit.
  • On-site intervention Whenever needed, with support across the whole country from our head office in Alfragide.

It is the same managed services model as DataRoad's IT Unlimited: infrastructure watched every day and problems solved before they become downtime.

Six projects, from 2019 to 2026

The relationship with SSAP has grown across several buildings and regions of the country:

  • 2019 Repair and certification of 272 network points in racks and rooms, for a total of 456 points certified by DataRoad (cabling certification project).
  • 2020 Replacement of the cabling for the entire IT network at SSAP's head office, with installation and repair of outlets and opening of access hatches in the suspended ceiling.
  • 2021 Professional wireless network in a multi-storey building in Olaias, Lisbon, with remote management by DataRoad (Wi-Fi network in Olaias).
  • 2023 Refurbishment of the IT and electrical network at the Avenida Guerra Junqueiro community centre, for a training room (Guerra Junqueiro project).
  • 2025 Structured network and 56 Wi-Fi 7 access points at the Estalagem de Évora, the Estalagem do Cruzeiro (Aljubarrota) and Casa Alice Félix (São Pedro do Sul), with firewalls, switches and ongoing management (news on the 56 Wi-Fi 7 points).
  • 2026 Business wireless network with 14 access points, rack, firewall and alerting.

The contracts between SSAP and DataRoad are published and can be consulted on the BASE Portal. See also the public bodies that work with DataRoad, from RTP to Instituto Superior Técnico.

Who else trusts DataRoad with their network

Public bodies, embassies, hotels and clinics share one requirement: they cannot be left without a network. These are the clients DataRoad looks after.

A single partner handles the survey, the design, the certified structured cabling, the managed firewall, the wireless network and its management. No responsibilities bouncing from supplier to supplier. To size your own space, read the guide how many access points you need.

Reference projects

The published cases also include the IT infrastructure of a car rental operation in Portugal. The full list is in all success stories; the detailed case of SSAP, with structured networks and 56 Wi-Fi 7 points in three buildings, sets out the challenge, solution and results.

Frequently asked questions

How does a business wireless network differ from an ordinary router?

It uses enterprise-grade access points with centralised management, separate networks for staff and visitors, a firewall and monitoring. It handles many simultaneous users and shows the state of the network in real time.

What does alerting do in a managed network?

It detects faults the moment they happen. If an access point stops responding or the internet goes down, the DataRoad team receives the alert and acts before users are left without a network.

Does DataRoad build wireless networks outside Lisbon?

Yes. Our head office is in Alfragide and our support covers the whole country, as the SSAP projects in Lisbon, Évora, Aljubarrota and São Pedro do Sul show.

Which organisations does DataRoad work with?

Companies and organisations with more than 10 workstations, always under contract and directly with the end client.
