For a school's leadership, IT has a single objective: no lesson, exam or start of term held up by the network. Cabling and migrations go into the summer, Christmas and Easter breaks; term time is for operations and support. In September the school knows everything that will happen until July.
Classroom blocks, sports hall, canteen, library and gatehouse linked by undocumented cables are common. Fibre or wireless bridges between blocks, one rack per building and complete documentation are the foundation of a network for the next decade.
