What does a poorly managed network cost the North?

The region lives on exports — textiles, footwear, metalworking, components — and on a growing services hub between Boavista, Matosinhos, Maia and Gaia. Each profile has its hidden bill:

  • Factory in continuous operation Without alerting, a night-time failure is only discovered when the morning shift arrives.
  • Factory floor vs. office Dust, humidity and vibration destroy office-grade cabling; the run between buildings is the link that fails most.
  • Production equipment connected without a plan PLCs, scales and scanners join the network outside the design and expose everything else.
  • Clients in other time zones Forwarders and buyers expect shipping documents and invoices on time; a morning offline has an immediate cost.

Why is redundancy worth more than megabits?

On the factory floor, the decisive question is: what happens when the fibre drops mid-shift? A second carrier with automatic failover costs a fraction of an afternoon's lost production. The reasoning extends to rack power and any equipment without a twin — if it has no alternative, it is a single point of failure.

Local proof: Boavista Palace Serviced Apartments handed their wireless network to DataRoad. The scope then grew to 72 apartments — a stable signal in every unit and guests on a network separate from operations.

How do you cable a historic building and an industrial park?

In Porto's Baixa, the old structure dictates every cable route; in the industrial zones, distance rules. The DataRoad team defines the route on site, uses trunking where there is no conduit and runs fibre optics between racks whenever copper cannot cover the run. At handover, the client receives the certification of every outlet in a report — the foundation of the whole structured network infrastructure.

Business Wi-Fi starts from on-site measurements and then moves to a central console: changes, firmware and diagnostics without travel. Roaming between APs, Wi-Fi 6 or 7 and isolated guests.

Works on the ground, management remote. A well-documented network is what makes it possible to resolve remotely in minutes what would otherwise need a trip.

A VLAN for production

Industrial controllers rarely receive patches. We place them on their own segment, with firewall rules that allow only essential traffic. An infected office PC does not reach the line — nor the line the ERP.

How does remote follow-up work?

  1. Continuous monitoring — servers, links and active equipment under observation; many incidents are resolved before any user is affected.
  2. Helpdesk — remote and telephone response with deadlines committed in writing.
  3. Technical visits — cabling, hardware replacement, radio surveys and racks, with the team travelling north.
  4. Reassessment — the architecture is reviewed when the company grows or moves premises.

Does the scope change because you are 300 km from Alfragide?

No. Almost everything is operated remotely and planned visits are stated in the proposal. The four services that matter most for a plant in Matosinhos or a head office in Boavista:

Frequently asked questions

Does DataRoad have an office in Porto?

No; the head office is in Alfragide and support covers the whole country, with planned visits and a contracted on-site response. The written commitment is the intervention time, which is what counts when a system is down.

Do you install cabling in factory environments?

Yes. We use trunking and mechanical protection suited to the environment and certify every point at the end.

Can I split services with my current provider?

Yes. Some clients hand us only network and security and keep the ERP with another partner; the responsibility matrix is closed before go-live.

What does a managed services contract cost?

From €395/month + VAT on IT Unlimited Essential; the final amount depends on workstations, servers and coverage. It is a fixed monthly fee, with no calls counted — see the IT Unlimited plan.
