Looking for the service rather than the article? Everything about our managed cybersecurity for businesses is on the dedicated page.

DataRoad - IT Services and Consulting applies a single managed cybersecurity architecture across every company it serves: firewalls managed from a central point, security probes installed at each client, endpoint protection with a single console, accounts secured with 2FA and multi-factor authentication, and monitoring with alerting. This protection is included in the IT Unlimited plans. The practical effect is an immediate response to any emergency and a rare track record: in 11 years, DataRoad has never suffered a security incident.

Why piecemeal security fails

Many companies build their protection from loose layers: a firewall bought one year, antivirus another, and nobody responsible for reading the alerts. The problem is not the product; it is the lack of someone to operate it.

Attackers do not choose victims by size, they choose them by ease. And ease almost always comes from the same place: mixed equipment, rules never reviewed and no continuous monitoring. DataRoad reverses this logic and takes over the operation of its clients’ security, with the same architecture for all of them.

A standardised architecture: the advantage you feel in an emergency

Using the same security solution at every company looks like a technical decision. In reality, it is the decision that most shortens the time between alert and action.

  • Diagnosis without hesitation The team knows the infrastructure by heart, because it is the same at every client.
  • Reviewed configurations Standards tested by people who do this work every day, rather than set-ups only one person understands.
  • Every improvement reaches everyone A new rule or a lesson learned is applied immediately across all clients.
  • No dependence on one person Any DataRoad engineer can step in at any client.

This is how a premium MSP works: business security designed to be operated every day, not merely installed.

The five layers of DataRoad managed cybersecurity

1. Firewalls managed from a central point

The firewall is the network’s first barrier and also the one that degrades most when nobody looks after it: outdated rules, forgotten remote access, old firmware. At DataRoad clients, firewalls are centralised and managed by our team.

  • Policies Defined, reviewed and updated by DataRoad.
  • Remote access Controlled from a single point, with secure connections.
  • Changes Made by people who know the network, and always documented.
  • Incidents The team already has the visibility and access to act, without waiting for third parties.

To understand the difference, read the article managed firewall or purchased firewall or explore our managed firewalls and network security service.

2. Security probes inside the network

The firewall guards the perimeter, but much of the risk travels inside the network. That is why we install security probes at every client, which observe internal traffic and report to DataRoad’s central platform.

With the probes, visibility is real rather than assumed. When something deviates from the norm, DataRoad knows before the user feels the problem. This is the layer that turns reactive security into watched security.

3. Endpoints protected with a single console

Most attacks start on a computer: an attachment opened in a hurry, a downloaded file, a laptop outside the office. Workstations and servers deserve the same seriousness as the network.

Endpoint protection is centralised and managed by DataRoad. The decision to install, update or switch off protection is not left to each user: the same solution runs on every device, configured by us, followed on a single console and updated in a controlled way. If a device becomes unprotected or a threat appears, the team sees it and acts. After one day of deployment, the entire estate is covered and visible.

4. Identity protected with 2FA and MFA

A password on its own is no longer enough. Stolen credentials are one of the most common ways into company systems, so DataRoad treats identity as a central part of protection.

Access to email, collaboration tools, remote access, admin panels and other critical accounts is protected with two-factor authentication (2FA) and multi-factor authentication (MFA). If a password is discovered, the attacker still cannot get in.

  • Up-to-date devices Operating system and applications kept current in a controlled way to close known vulnerabilities.
  • Protected endpoints Protection installed, configured and monitored centrally.
  • Accounts with 2FA/MFA The same access policies across the whole company.
  • Access management Handled by people who know the infrastructure, with an immediate response when something changes.

In Microsoft environments, see how we apply these principles in managed Microsoft 365 for businesses.

5. NOC and monitoring with alerting

Security equipment with nobody watching what it detects is decoration. At DataRoad, protection is tied to monitoring with alerting: a relevant event raises an alarm and the team acts.

DataRoad does not wait for the client’s phone call: it sees, assesses and acts. For those who need monitoring outside normal hours, the Premium 365 plan adds nights, weekends and public holidays, with 24/7 monitoring exclusive to this tier. Find out more about our NOC and IT monitoring.

Eleven years without a single security incident

Since 2015, DataRoad has managed the IT infrastructure of companies, hotels, clinics and international organisations. Throughout this period, DataRoad has never suffered a security incident.

This is not luck; it is method: the same five layers, applied with discipline every day. It is this way of working that protects DataRoad’s 232 clients and our own operation.

Good practices that complete the protection

Products are half the equation. The other half is consistent practice that closes the usual doors attackers use:

  • Planned updates Systems, applications and network equipment kept up to date before flaws are exploited.
  • Tested backups With an off-site copy and verified restores; see managed backup solutions and disaster recovery and business continuity.
  • Segmented network Users, servers, guests and devices kept separate to contain damage; learn how VLANs and network segmentation work.
  • Least privilege Each person accesses only what they need; few admin accounts, protected with MFA.
  • Secure remote access External connections protected and controlled; read why a VPN is no longer enough.
  • Joiners and leavers with a process Accounts created and removed in a controlled way.
  • Strong credentials Consistent policies instead of reused passwords.
  • Alert teams Phishing awareness, where most attacks begin.
  • Clear internal rules See the 7 internal cybersecurity policies.
  • Know the enemy Understanding the 4 phases of a cyberattack helps stop it early.

None of these practices is glamorous. The difference lies in applying all of them, every day, in the same way at every client.

Artificial intelligence: more productivity, more attack surface

AI has entered companies quickly, often brought in by employees themselves. It is a real opportunity, but it changes the risk map and makes security more important, not less.

  • Data outside the perimeter Internal information pasted into tools the company neither chose nor configured.
  • More credible fraud More convincing phishing and, in many cases, faked voices and images.
  • More integrations, more doors Every tool connected to company accounts is another access point to protect.

With managed endpoints, 2FA/MFA, centralised firewalls and alerting, the company adopts AI with control: it knows where the data is, who accesses it and what travels across the network. Given requirements such as those of the NIS2 directive, adopting AI without this foundation is an avoidable risk.

The experience behind the method

DataRoad’s CEO, Luís Fernandes, has worked with networks and IT security since 1995, at some of the largest IT companies in Portugal, and was responsible for the technical management of a multinational IT security company.

Along the way he designed and supported security and backup solutions with Symantec/Veritas, McAfee, GFI Software and WatchGuard on Microsoft infrastructures, worked at HP Portugal and at two IT distributors representing the world’s leading brands. He holds technical certifications from several vendors, including Microsoft, Panda Security, WatchGuard, Symantec and McAfee.

That knowledge was gained in companies with more than 3,000 endpoints, where centralised management is not optional. Those who entrust their security to DataRoad get three decades of experience, not a product reseller.

Included in the IT Unlimited plans, at no extra cost

This protection is not an add-on. Managed firewalls, probes, endpoints, 2FA/MFA and alerting are part of the IT Unlimited plans, with predictable costs and the same solution at every client.

  • Essential Remote and telephone support, from 10 workstations.
  • Premium Adds unlimited on-site assistance.
  • Premium 365 Adds nights, weekends and public holidays.
