  • 01A VLAN logically divides the network into zones while using the same physical switches.

  • 03Staff, guests, voice, cameras and sensitive systems each get their own zone.

A VLAN is a logical division of the network that separates groups of devices while using the same physical switches. Segmenting the network with VLANs is one of the measures that most improves the security and performance of a business network, because it stops a threat from spreading freely and reduces unnecessary traffic. Yet many companies still have everything on a single flat network.

The network as a building

Without VLANs, the network is an open-plan space where everyone walks everywhere. With VLANs, the same building gains floors and closed rooms: each group works in its own space and does not see the others' unless it needs to.

Security: containing the damage

When a computer is infected or a visitor's device is compromised, segmentation stops the threat from freely reaching servers and sensitive data. It is one of the most effective defences against ransomware spreading within the network.

Typical zones in a segmented network

  • Staff Separated from the visitor network and guest Wi-Fi.
  • Sensitive systems Servers and invoicing in a protected VLAN.
  • Voice over IP Phones separated from data, with better call quality.
  • Cameras and IoT Isolated from the rest of the network.

Performance and management

Segmentation reduces noise on the network and makes it possible to prioritise critical traffic. The result is a faster, more stable network that is much easier to troubleshoot and manage.

Frequently asked questions

Does a small company need VLANs?

Yes, at least basic segmentation: separating visitor Wi-Fi from the internal network. As the company grows, segmentation becomes even more important.

Do we need to replace equipment?

Managed switches are required, and they are common in business environments. With consumer-grade equipment, upgrading the active network equipment is usually the first step.

Do VLANs make network management more complicated?

Properly configured and documented, they simplify it: they isolate problems and make the network predictable. The key is for them to be implemented and managed by people who know what they are doing.
