In 2019, DataRoad - IT Services and Consulting strengthened OnRising's security on two fronts at once: it installed two biometric access control systems in two rooms and a dedicated firewall, with networks and VLANs, to protect the internal network. The firewall then came under DataRoad's ongoing management, within an IT Unlimited contract.

Two entry points, one strategy
Every organisation has two doors to protect: the door to its physical space and the door to its network. A biometric system decides who enters a room and logs every access individually. A firewall with VLAN segmentation decides how traffic moves within the network and isolates any compromised device.
Implemented together, the two solutions gave OnRising simultaneous control over who enters its premises and what moves across its internal network, significantly reducing the attack surface.
How it was done
- Network reviewed — existing network points checked and corrected.
- Biometrics — biometric door-opening devices installed in two rooms, connected to the network.
- Access control software — installation and configuration, with event logging.
- Firewall — installation and configuration, with networks and virtual networks (VLANs) created.
- Handover to management — ongoing maintenance and management of the firewall, with the team trained on the solution implemented.
