In 2019, Câmara Municipal do Montijo entrusted DataRoad - IT Services and Consulting with the physical protection of its datacentre. We installed a biometric access control system on the room’s door, connected to the municipality’s network, which logs every entry individually and replaces shared physical keys. It is a layer of security as important as the firewall: protecting servers starts with controlling who can reach them.

Why datacentre access is a security issue
A municipality’s datacentre holds the local government management systems, residents’ data and the infrastructure that supports public services. A lost, copied or lent key opens the door to all of this, without leaving a trace.
Biometrics change the rules. Unlike a card or a code, they cannot be lent or forgotten, and every access is tied to a person and a time. That auditable log is increasingly required in compliance and information security contexts in the public sector.
How the installation was carried out
- Biometric lock — a door-opening device with a biometric sensor.
- Network connection — integration of the device into the municipality’s IT network.
- Access control software — installation and configuration, with event logging.
- Training — preparing the team responsible for day-to-day use.
