Fibre optics or copper in business network infrastructure: where each one performs best

CAT6/CAT6A copper to the desks, fibre in the backbone between racks and buildings: how to design a hybrid business network with the right reach, speed and cost.

At a glance

For decision-makers short on time.

  • 01Copper CAT6/CAT6A connects desks to the rack cheaply and powers devices via PoE.
  • 02Fibre covers long distances, the high-capacity backbone and is immune to interference.
  • 03Most well-designed networks combine both: fibre in the backbone, copper in distribution.

In business network infrastructure, fibre optics and copper do not compete: each has its place. CAT6/CAT6A copper connects workstations to the rack at low cost and with PoE power; fibre covers long distances and the high-throughput backbone. Almost every well-designed network uses both.

Copper: the foundation of every floor

To connect workstations to the rack over the distances of a single floor, copper is the natural choice: more economical, easy to install and able to power access points and cameras via PoE.

Fibre: reach, throughput and the future

  • Distance Between buildings or distant floors.
  • Backbone High-capacity links between racks and core switches.
  • Interference Immune to electromagnetic noise.
  • Future-proofing Capacity to grow without replacing the cable.

The hybrid design

The typical network has fibre in the backbone and copper in distribution: throughput and reach where they are needed, value for money where it makes sense. This is the design DataRoad - IT Services and Consulting uses in its certified structured cabling, complemented by business Wi-Fi.

Frequently asked questions

Is fibre always faster?

It allows much higher throughput and distances, but for a workstation a few metres away, good copper delivers what is needed at lower cost.

Does a single-floor office need fibre?

Rarely for distribution; it can pay off in the backbone between racks or in links to servers. It is assessed case by case, ideally as part of an IT consultancy review.

Is fibre fragile?

Properly installed and protected, it is robust and long-lasting; the care lies in the installation.
