Wi-Fi 6, 6E or Wi-Fi 7 for your business network: decision criteria for a 10-year investment

Office, hotel or clinic: which Wi-Fi generation pays off, what 6 GHz changes and why the site survey decides the outcome — with two Wi-Fi 7 projects.

  • 01In a typical office, Wi-Fi 6 with a good design is enough; hotels and clinics justify Wi-Fi 7.
  • 026E and 7 use 6 GHz: 480 MHz of new spectrum in Europe, with less interference.
  • 03Site survey, cabling, PoE switches and segmentation matter more than the generation.
  • 04Real cases: SSAP with 56 Wi-Fi 7 access points and Clínica Mulher with 192 network points.

Choosing between Wi-Fi 6, 6E and Wi-Fi 7 is an investment decision for eight to ten years, and the right question is not “which is fastest” but “which avoids complaints and early replacement in my space”. In a typical office, Wi-Fi 6 with a good design does the job. In hotels, clinics, very busy spaces and networks that must last a decade, Wi-Fi 7 is the rational choice. And in every scenario, what matters most to the result is the network design, not the generation of the equipment.

Which generation should you choose for your type of space?

ScenarioOptionBusiness reason
Standalone building, up to 30 employeesWi-Fi 6 with a careful designLittle external interference and few connected devices: there is spare capacity
Office in a city building, surrounded by other networksWi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7On 6 GHz the network no longer competes for channels with the neighbours
HotelWi-Fi 7Hundreds of guest devices, video and calls at the same time, and a ten-year horizon
Clinic, practice or healthcare facilityWi-Fi 7Medical equipment, staff, patients and companions on separate networks, without drop-outs
Auditoriums, coworking, spaces open to the publicWi-Fi 7High density of people in the same place at the same time
Warehouse or factoryWi-Fi 6 or 7 on ruggedised equipmentRange, coverage and physical resilience count for more than the generation
Restaurant or retail chainsWi-Fi 6 with centralised managementThe gain lies in managing every outlet from one place and isolating the customer network

What actually changes from one generation to the next?

The generations are compatible with one another: new equipment works with older devices, just as a recent car model drives on the same roads as the previous one. The difference lies in what each one adds.

  • Wi-Fi 6, from 2019 Optimised for environments with many devices connected at once; operates on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
  • Wi-Fi 6E, from 2021 The same technology, with access to the 6 GHz band.
  • Wi-Fi 7, certified from January 2024 The current generation. The Wi-Fi Alliance highlights channels of up to 320 MHz (twice the previous width), MLO, which connects a device to several bands at once, and a modulation that carries around 20% more data.

For a decision-maker, this is all you need to remember. Each band works like a lane of radio traffic. The 2.4 and 5 GHz lanes are congested by networks from neighbouring buildings, cafés and phones. 6 GHz is a new and practically clear lane. MLO allows two lanes to be used at once: if one gets blocked, data goes through the other without the user noticing.

Across Europe, the band between 5945 and 6425 MHz was harmonised for Wi-Fi by the European Commission in 2021, which represents 480 MHz of additional spectrum. 6E and 7 use that band — provided that laptops and smartphones are also compatible.

Why does the design matter more than the equipment?

Because the best Wi-Fi 7 access point on the market, installed in the wrong place, delivers less than a correctly designed Wi-Fi 6 network. We find the same problems in almost every audit: devices hidden above metal suspended ceilings, all set to the same channel and connected to old switches that limit throughput.

A professional business Wi-Fi proposal starts with five elements, before brands are even mentioned:

  1. Site survey — a radio survey that defines the location, number and power of each access point.
  2. Properly sized structured cabling and switching — today’s access points often need faster ports and more PoE power; an old switch wastes the investment.
  3. Segmentation — staff, visitors, devices and CCTV on isolated networks, as we describe in guest networks and Wi-Fi security best practice.
  4. Consistent internet access — fast Wi-Fi is of little use over a slow connection or one with no backup; see how to size and duplicate your company’s internet.
  5. Operation after handover — who monitors the network, with which tools and with what response.

If the quote in your hands is just a list of equipment, with no radio survey, it is missing the part that guarantees the result.

Where is Wi-Fi 7 already at work?

SSAP: three buildings, one network, 56 access points

Through a public tender, the Social Services of the Public Administration (SSAP) awarded DataRoad the structured network infrastructure and Wi-Fi for three buildings — Estalagem de Évora, Casa Alice Félix and, in Aljubarrota, Estalagem do Cruzeiro. The work brought together structured cabling, cable trunking, firewalls, switches and 56 Wi-Fi 7 access points, configured by our team and since then monitored, maintained and managed by DataRoad. See the SSAP project in detail.

It is a scenario where Wi-Fi 7 is justified beyond question: accommodation, separate buildings operated as a single network and a long-lived public investment.

Clínica Mulher: 192 network points in the Twin Towers

In Sete Rios, Lisbon, Clínica Mulher occupies space in the Twin Towers. DataRoad installed 192 network points there, 48-port PoE switches and Wi-Fi 7 access points managed centrally from the cloud. Clinical and administrative staff work on one network; patients and companions use an isolated guest network; both sit behind a business-grade firewall. The project also included a server and a NAS dedicated to backups. Today, an IT Unlimited contract covers around 50 workstations, the server and the network. Discover the Clínica Mulher project.

Is private 5G an alternative for my company?

Only in very particular contexts. Private 5G networks serve factories with mobile robots, large automated warehouses and ports — places that need mobility across vast areas and very tight control over the connection. In offices, hospitality, healthcare and retail, well-designed Wi-Fi is cheaper, simpler to manage and works with all the devices the company already owns.

Frequently asked questions

Will our existing laptops and smartphones connect to a Wi-Fi 7 network?

Yes. There is full backward compatibility: a Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 laptop connects without any problem, but only compatible devices benefit from new features such as 6 GHz.

Should I replace a Wi-Fi 6 network that is working well?

As a rule, no. With a good design and no user complaints, migration to Wi-Fi 7 happens when the access points reach end of life or when the space changes.

Does moving to Wi-Fi 7 mean new cabling?

Not always. It may mean reviewing switches and network outlets, because today’s access points need faster ports and more PoE power; the site survey tells you exactly what to do.

In an office, does it make sense to replace Wi-Fi with private 5G?

No. Private 5G is a solution for industry, large-scale logistics and ports; in an office, well-designed Wi-Fi is more economical, simpler and compatible with everything.
