Almost every unstable business Wi-Fi network failed on the day it was set up, and almost always for the same seven reasons. They all share the same root — skipping the design — and they can all be avoided with a simple rule: measure before you buy and design before you install. Here are the seven, in the order they usually happen.
The seven mistakes in a business wireless network
- Buying before measuring — the equipment arrives before anyone has studied the building, and the kit defines the network when it should be the other way round.
- Home equipment in an office — supermarket routers and repeaters serving 30 people hold up until the first day the office is full.
- Hidden access point — inside a comms cupboard or on top of the electrical panel "so it can't be seen". The signal can't be seen either.
- Cascading repeaters — every cheap repeater cuts speed and adds instability; three in a chain are a toy network.
- One network for everything — staff, visitors, cameras and printers on the same segment, until the day security depended on them being separate.
- Factory-default channels — access points interfering with each other and with the neighbours, all on the same frequency at the same time.
- Nobody in charge — it was installed, it worked and nobody looked at it again: no updates, no monitoring, no owner.
A network is not bought in boxes: it is designed. The design is what separates "we have Wi-Fi" from "the Wi-Fi works".

The sequence that avoids all seven
| Stage | What happens | Mistakes it eliminates |
|---|---|---|
| Measure | Coverage survey of the actual space | 1, 3 |
| Design | A network planned for the real people and devices, with segmentation and a channel plan | 4, 5, 6 |
| Install | Professional equipment in the right places | 2, 3 |
| Manage | Monitoring, updates and a named owner | 7 |
Already have a network with these mistakes?
This is the process DataRoad - IT Services and Consulting applies to business Wi-Fi, from a 10-person office to a 100-room hotel, with more than 138 sites and 1321 Ubiquiti devices under management. We take over other people's networks every week: tell us the state of yours and receive a no-obligation recovery plan.
- Diagnosis and tuning — Wi-Fi site survey and optimisation.
- The physical foundation — CAT6A structured cabling and fibre optics.
