  • 01A Wi-Fi password shared for years is an open door into the company’s internal network.
  • 02An isolated guest network gives visitors internet access only, never access to company systems.
  • 03Segmentation, WPA3, managed keys, visibility and updates must be applied continuously.

Company Wi-Fi is a door into the internal network, and a password shared for years is the same as leaving it open. A secure business wireless network separates visitors from data, manages and renews access keys, uses current encryption and is continuously updated and monitored. Done properly, it is invisible to the team and impassable for anyone who was not invited.

Quick test: who has the key?

Count how many outsiders know the Wi-Fi password: former employees, suppliers who gave a presentation, the air conditioning engineer, colleagues’ relatives. If the password has not changed in more than a year, the honest answer is “I don’t know”.

The problem is not just giving internet access to strangers. Whoever gets onto the wrong Wi-Fi gets onto the network where the company’s shared folders, invoicing and printers are.

Guest network: the basic lock

A guest network is a parallel Wi-Fi that gives visitors internet access and nothing else: it cannot see computers, servers or printers. It is receiving visitors in the living room rather than handing them the house keys.

On a professional network it is simple to set up and eliminates the biggest source of wireless risk — the company password circulating among strangers. The rule: visitors connect to the internet; only the team connects to the company.

Five practices of a secure business wireless network

  1. Segmentation — team, guests and devices (cameras, TVs, printers) on separate networks.
  2. Current encryption — modern equipment with WPA3 and the latest protocols, not the 2015 router.
  3. Managed keys — renewed according to rules and revoked when someone leaves the company.
  4. Visibility — knowing at all times which devices are connected and questioning those that should not be.
  5. Updates — access points and controllers also have security flaws that someone has to fix.

The hard part is maintaining, not building

None of these practices is complex. The hard part is applying them all, every month, with a business to run. That is why companies hand their network to DataRoad - IT Services and Consulting: we design the business wireless network with security built in, integrate it with managed firewalls and operate everything continuously — updates, access and monitoring. We manage more than 138 sites and 1321 Ubiquiti devices.

For the team, the Wi-Fi simply works. For anyone trying to get in uninvited, everything changes.
