Portuguese SMEs are frequent targets of cyberattacks precisely because they have, on average, fewer defences than large companies. A managed cybersecurity programme closes those gaps with nine measures: firewall and segmentation, tested backups, MFA, centralised updates, training, least privilege, VPN, monitoring and an incident response plan.

The five priorities, in brief

  • Dedicated firewall With segmentation between critical systems, workstations and visitors.
  • Tested backups With at least one offline or immutable copy.
  • Multi-factor authentication On email and all remote access.
  • Managed updates Never left to each user's discretion.
  • Training Most incidents come in through the inbox.

Layer 1 — Protecting the perimeter and the network

Managed firewall and VLANs

The firewall is the first barrier between the internal network and the outside world. With the network divided into VLANs, a compromised device is contained within its segment and the incident does not spread across the whole company.

VPN for all remote access

With remote and hybrid working, access to systems from outside should always go through an encrypted VPN. Direct, unprotected connections to the internal network have no place in a business.

Layer 2 — Protecting accounts and people

Multi-factor authentication (MFA)

With a second factor active, a stolen password is no longer enough to get into email, files or applications. It is one of the most cost-effective measures and should cover corporate email, VPN and business applications.

Least privilege

Each person should have access only to what their role requires. This limits the damage from a compromised account and makes auditing easier. The most efficient way to apply it is centralised access management, with Active Directory or equivalent.

Ongoing training

A click on a phishing link, a shared password, an attachment opened without checking — that is how most incidents begin. Short, regular awareness sessions reduce this risk significantly.

Layer 3 — Keeping systems healthy

Centralised security updates

Outdated operating systems, business software and network firmware are among the most common entry points. Centralised patch management ensures that fixes reach every workstation consistently.

Backups that actually restore

A backup that “ran without errors” may be incomplete or corrupted. Good practice follows the 3-2-1 rule — three copies, on two different media, one off site — and includes periodic restore tests.

Layer 4 — Detecting and responding

Continuous monitoring

An attack is rarely instantaneous. Before the impact there are signs: repeated access attempts, unusual traffic, unauthorised changes. With 24/7 monitoring, available in the Premium 365 plan, these signs are dealt with before they turn into a serious incident.

Incident response plan

Knowing in advance whom to contact, which systems to isolate first and how to communicate internally shortens reaction time — and reduces the impact.

Where to start without trying to do everything at once

If most of these points do not yet exist in your company, start with an audit of the current infrastructure. It identifies the most critical gaps and ranks the fixes by their impact on risk.
