OnRising: biometric access control and network firewall

A OnRising chose DataRoad to install two biometric access control systems in two rooms and for the installation of one dedicated firewall to the protection of your internal computer network.

Installation services carried out

The project combined physical security and network security in a single initiative:

• Checking and correcting network nodes existing;
• Installation of biometric devices door-opening mechanisms in two rooms, connected to the mains;
• Software installation and configuration access control, with event logging;
• Installing a firewall, including network setup and virtual networks (VLANs);
• Ongoing maintenance and management of the firewall, including the configuration and training of the team on the implemented solution.

Why does combining access control and a firewall enhance security?

An organisation’s security comprises two aspects that must work in tandem: physical access to premises and access to the IT network. A biometric system controls who physically enters a room, with individual records of each entry; the firewall, combined with VLAN segmentation, controls and isolates traffic within the network, limiting the impact of any compromised device. By implementing both solutions together, OnRising now has simultaneous control over who accesses its premises and how traffic flows within its internal network — significantly reducing the organisation’s attack surface.
